THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS EXTENDED THE

* FLASH FLOOD WARNING FOR...
  CENTRAL BRISTOL COUNTY IN SOUTHEAST MASSACHUSETTS
  THIS INCLUDES THE CITY OF TAUNTON

* UNTIL 1000 AM EDT THURSDAY

* AS OF 845 PM EDT WEDNESDAY...LOCAL OFFICIALS REPORT THAT ROAD
CLOSURES AND EVACUATION ORDERS IN TAUNTON HAVE NOT CHANGED. THE
POTENTIAL CONTINUES TO EXIST FOR FAILURE OF THE WHITTENTON POND DAM 
ON THE MILL RIVER.

THE WHITTENTON POND DAM IS 12 FEET HIGH. IF THIS DAM FAILS...A FLOOD 
WAVE OF APPROXIMATELY 8 FEET WOULD OCCUR...WITH A 4 TO 6 FOOT FLOOD 
WAVE INTO PARTS OF TAUNTON THAT ARE DOWNSTREAM...INCLUDING PARTS OF 
THE DOWNTOWN AREA.

THIS IS A DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. IF YOU ARE IN AN 
AREA WHERE AN EVACUATION HAS BEEN ORDERED...LEAVE IMMEDIATELY 
PEOPLE BELOW THE DAM SHOULD TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION BY MONITORING 
LOCAL RADIO OR TELEVISION AND FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ANY 
REQUIRED EVACUATION AS OUTLINED BY LOCAL EMERGENCY OFFICIALS.
