TORNADO AND SPECIAL MARINE WARNING
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MIAMI FL
317 AM EST SAT JAN 25 1997

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MIAMI HAS ISSUED A
TORNADO AND SPECIAL MARINE WARNING EFFECTIVE UNTIL 415 AM EST
FOR PEOPLE IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATION......

IN SOUTH FLORIDA

...LOWER FLORIDA KEYS OF MONROE COUNTY

AND THE ADJACENT COASTAL WATERS WEST OF A LINE FROM MARATHON TO CAPE
ROMANO.

DOPPLER RADAR INDICATES WATERSPOUTS ARE DEVELOPING NEAR THE MARQUESAS
KEYS AND TO THE SOUTHWEST OF KEY WEST. MOVEMENT HAS BEEN TOWARDS THE
NORTHEAST DURING THE PAST HOUR BUT A MORE EASTERLY MOVEMENT IS EXPECTED
DURING THE NEXT HOUR.

AT 315 AM THE STRONGEST WATERSPOUT WAS INDICATED ON RADAR ABOUT 40 MILES
TO THE SOUTHWEST OF KEY WEST. WINDS IN EXCESS OF 50 KNOTS WERE OBSERVED.

FREQUNET LIGHTNING IS ALSO BEING DETECTED. MARINERS ARE URGED TO AVOID
THIS AREA AND SEEK OR REMAIN IN PORT THROUGH SUNRISE.

THESE WATERSPOUTS ARE PART OF A LARGE AREA OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS THAT
WILL MOVE EAST ACROSS THE AREA DURING THE MORNING HOURS.

IF YOU ARE IN THE PATH OF A TORNADO...THE SAFEST PLACE IS UNDER
STURDY FURNITURE IN AN INTERIOR ROOM ON THE LOWEST FLOOR. USE
PILLOWS TO PROTECT YOUR HEAD. AVOID WINDOWS. A MOBILE HOME IS NOT A
SAFE REFUGE FROM A TORNADO. MOVE TO A MORE SUBSTANTIAL BUILDING. DO
NOT TRY TO OUTRUN A TORNADO IN YOUR VECHICLE.

WATCH FOR SIGNS OF DEVELOPING SEVERE STORMS. HAILSTONES AND
UNUSUALLY LOW SWIRLING CLOUDS ARE OFTEN SEEN NEAR DEVELOPING
TORNADOES. STRONG DAMAGING WINDS AND TORNADOES OFTEN PRODUCE
A LOUD ROARING SOUND LIKE A TRAIN. FREQUENT LIGHTNING OCCURS
NEAR THE MOST SEVERE PART OF THE THUNDERSTORM.

AT NIGHT OR DURING HEAVY RAIN...THE ONLY CLUE TO A TORNADO'S
PRESENCE MAY BE ITS ROAR. IF A UNUSUALLY LOUD ROAR IS HEARD...
TAKE COVER IMMEDIATELY.
