BULLETIN - EAS ACTIVATION REQUESTED
FLOOD WARNING
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BUFFALO NY
1058 AM EST THU JAN 23 1997

...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A FLOOD WARNING FOR ICE
JAM FLOODING FOR PEOPLE ALONG MUDDY CREEK IN THE TOWN OF EVANS AND
ALONG CAZENOVIA CREEK NEAR CAZENOVIA PARK FOR THIS AFTERNOON AND
EVENING...

YESTERDAY'S WARM TEMPERATURES CAUSED ENOUGH MELTING AND RUNOFF TO
CAUSE ICE JAM FLOODING ALONG THESE CREEKS.

ALONG CAZENOVIA CREEK...SEVERAL EVACUATIONS HAVE BEEN REPORTED NEAR
POTTERS ROAD AND WOODSIDE AVENUE IN CAZENOVIA PARK. THE ICE JAM ON
CAZENOVIA CREEK EXTENDS FROM THE BRIDGE ON ORCHARD PARK ROAD NEAR
SENECA STREET AND HARLEM ROAD...DOWNSTREAM SEVERAL MILES INTO THE
CITY OF BUFFALO. FURTHER UPSTREAM THE CREEK IS RUNNING OPEN.

ALONG MUDDY CREEK...ABOUT 2 DOZEN HOMES ARE SURROUNDED BY WATER IN
THE LAKE ERIE BEACH AREA IN THE TOWN OF EVANS. SOME EVACUATIONS HAVE
BEEN REPORTED ALONG POINT BREEZE DRIVE AND COURT STREET AREAS WITH
WATER ALSO REPORTED OVER PORTIONS OF DAWN AVENUE. THE ICE JAM IS AT
THE MOUTH OF MUDDY CREEK AND EXTENDS UPSTREAM AND IS NOT EXPECTED TO
MOVE.

THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT MUCH COLDER TEMPERATURES WILL CUT OFF ANY
ADDITIONAL SNOWMELT RUNOFF THROUGH FRIDAY BUT MORE RAIN ALONG WITH
WARMER TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED FRIDAY NIGHT WHICH WILL CREATE MORE
RUNOFF AND INCREASE THE THREAT OF ADDITIONAL FLOODING FRIDAY NIGHT
INTO SATURDAY.

A FLOOD WARNING MEANS FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR HAS BEEN REPORTED.
IF YOU LIVE IN THESE AREAS YOU SHOULD TAKE THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS
TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY.

ANOTHER STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED BY 4PM THIS AFTERNOON.
