The forecaster’s discussion
Written by Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection for Philadelphia and filed with AirNow.
Current Conditions at 3 p.m. EDT this Tuesday afternoon: Light rain and drizzle persists with overcast skies in parts of the area. A brisk northeasterly flow of clean air has kept fine particle (PM2.5) and ozone concentrations rather low. While concentrations of these pollutants may increase some over the next few days, good air quality is expected. Here are the forecast details: *** Wednesday’s forecast: Clouds will break for a little sun Wednesday as high temperatures move to the upper 60s with the little added sun. Breezy northeast winds will maintain good air quality across the region. *** Extended forecast: High pressure will keep things dry Thursday through most of Saturday. A coastal low may retrograde enough (that is, move westward) enough to possibly influence our weather with more cloudiness and perhaps a shower or two late Saturday into Sunday. Strong mixing should allow good air quality to continue Thursday into the weekend.---McAuliffe

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.
Smoke
NOAA’s analysts have not drawn smoke over Penn Wynne in satellite imagery today.
NOAA’s model forecasts no measurable smoke near the ground here over the next two days.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.
What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
