The forecaster’s discussion
Written by Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection for Johnstown and filed with AirNow.
Current Conditions at 4 PM EDT this Tuesday afternoon: Skies remain overcast across the area with light rain, fog, and drizzle lingering about. A brisk east-northeast wind has brought in very clean air, so fine particle (PM2.5) and ozone concentrations are rather low. While levels of these pollutants increase a bit over the next couple of days, good air quality is still expected. Here are the forecast details: *** Wednesday’s forecast: Morning clouds and fog will break for some afternoon sunshine with high temperatures reaching the lower 60s. Breezy east winds will again maintain low levels of PM2.5 and ozone. *** Extended forecast: High pressure then controls the weather for the period Thursday through Saturday with areas of morning fog, then mostly sunny by day. Temperatures will slowly get back to normal over the weekend. Good air quality also continues Thursday into the weekend.---McAuliffe

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.
Smoke
NOAA’s analysts have not drawn smoke over Lorain in satellite imagery today.
NOAA’s model forecasts no measurable smoke near the ground here over the next two days.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.
What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
