The forecaster’s discussion

Written by Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection for Susquehanna Valley and filed with AirNow.

Current Conditions at 3 p.m. EDT this Friday afternoon: High pressure pushing southward is bringing partly to mostly sunny skies across the area with low values of fine particles (PM2.5) and ozone. Good air quality will continue through most of the forecast period with a much cooler and unsettled pattern starting Sunday. Here are the forecast details: *** Saturday’s forecast: Areas of fog to start, then skies turn out partly sunny Saturday. PM2.5 and ozone will average in the good range as highs reach the middle 70s. *** Sunday’s forecast: Mostly cloudy Sunday with showers and possibly a thunderstorm as an extensive area of low level moisture moves in. PM2.5 and ozone continue in the good range with highs in the lower 70s. *** Monday’s forecast: Overcast and cool Monday with a few showers under an easterly flow. Highs will only reach the lower to middle 60s, which will be the coolest daytime readings since last May. *** Extended forecast: A cool and unsettled pattern will continue as we move into the fall season Tuesday and Wednesday with showers and even some steadier rain likely. Fall begins at 8:04 pm EDT Tuesday evening. Temperatures will be limited to near 60 degrees as a cool air damming pattern sets up east of the Appalachians as a frontal boundary is stalled out to the south. Air quality mainly in the good range.---McAuliffe

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.

What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
