The forecaster’s discussion

Written by Evansville EPA - Vanderburgh County Health Dept. for Evansville and filed with AirNow.

Southern Regions: Both Ozone and PM2.5 readings Monday and Tuesday were good. As of Wednesday morning, the hourly readings for ozone and PM2.5 are good. Temperatures are in the low 60's with overcast sky cover. Wednesday is forecast to be cloudy and cooler than normal. Isolated sprinkles are possible as well. An upper level high will drift out of the region and upper level ridging will build back in for Thursday and Friday. This will decrease cloud cover and bring up temperatures slightly to end the work week. Temperatures Wednesday are forecast to be around 70 degrees. Thursday and Friday are forecast to be upper 70's to low 80's. Dewpoints are forecast to be in the upper 50's to low 60's. Winds are forecast to be from the NNE 0-10 MPH Wednesday through Friday. The NOAA 06Z BC model for PM2.5 forecasts moderate levels for Wednesday for SW, good for SE, and good levels for all of South Thursday through Friday. The Canadian model shows good levels for that entire forecast period. I think good is more likely. Models overpredicted yesterday and conditions are similar today. In addition, there will be NNE flow and low dew points. Only situation in which I see moderate even possible is if low level moisture gets trapped in an inversion and mixing is lessened. The NOAA 06Z BC model for ozone predicts good levels for the entire forecast period. The Canadian model forecasts good levels Wednesday through Friday. Good seems likely today with the temperatures, wind direction, cloud cover. Mixing heights are forecast to be around 3,000 ft. Wednesday, 5,000 ft. Thursday, and 3,500 ft. Friday.

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.

What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
